Today, Lao PDR is exposed to high demands for land, natural resources, and labour from its powerful neighbours, Vietnam, China, and Thailand. In conjunction with national plans to “modernize” subsistence farming (often shifting cultivation), this has led to rapid land use changes and a number of socio-environmental trade-offs linked to those.
